WARM
Featured on Connecticut NPR
Affiliate
Connecticut's
National
Public
Radio affiliate,
WSHU, headquartered
in Fairfield,
featured
WARM and
other local
aid agencies
in an audio
story that
debuted
on Tuesday,
December
15. The
piece was
heard locally
on Connecticut
NPR station
89.1. In
addition
to a soup
kitchen
client
of WARM's,
program
director
Russ Partridge
was extensively
interviewed.
We thank
WSHU for
taking
the time
and interest
to highlight
our work.
You can
read the
story HERE.
Better
yet,
you
can

the

Westerly
Middle School Visits WARM
A
food
drive
in October,
a visit
in November. The
8th grade
students
of the
Granite
Team
visited
the shelter
and soup
kitchen
the day
before
Thanksgiving. Breaking
up into
groups
of 10-11,
students
were
led through
the facilities
by WARM
Center
staff
and told
in detail
about
the 8
interrelated
programs
offered
at the
Center. A
wonderful
opportunity
for WARM
to educate
about
the causes,
effects
and solutions
to homelessness,
and an
opportunity
for the
youth
to see
how their
support
is put
to use.
WHUD
Grant Update
In
January
of
'09
WARM
was
awarded
a HUD
grant
in
the
amount
of
1.3
million
dollars
to
build
eight
supportive
units
for
the
disabled. Affordable
housing
continues
to
be
lacking
in
our
state
and
in
our
town,
and
is
proven
to
be
a preventative
measure
in
the
fight
against
homelessness.
Recognizing
the
need,
in
part
due
to
the
number
of
shelter
residents
that
have
social
security
income,
but
are
unable
to
secure
affordable
housing,
WARM
went
through
the
process
of
filing
a federal
grant
to
help
fill
this
need. In
a highly
competitive
grant
process
WARM
was
thrilled
to
be
chosen
our
first
time
at
bat.
The
work
has
just
begun
as
we
continue
to
secure
required
licenses,
permits
and
final
HUD
approval
on
all
aspects
of
our
plan. WARM
plans
on
breaking
ground
in
the
spring
of
2010.
Drawings
for 54 Spruce St. include 6
one bedroom and 2 two bedroom
apartments along with an expanded
soup kitchen and admin offices
on the first floor.
